The story goes that in 1961, Stephen Bailey, Business Manager of the Chicago Journeymen Plumbers Local Union #110, met with a plumber whose coveralls were dyed a perfect shade of green. Bailey asked the man how his coveralls turned that color. The man had been trying to detect a waste line that needed to be disconnected and to do so he had been using a green dye. This sparked an idea in Bailey's mind and thus a tradition was born. Every year since 1962, the Chicago River has flown green for St. Patrick's Day, showing the green-tinged way from Chicago to Ireland.
